Mike Chatham - Chatham Knives

(Original publish date was Sept. 6 in Facebook Group Bay Minette Welcomes You)

Are you like me and appreciate good quality and fine workmanship when it comes to kitchen things?  Let’s face it—standing in the kitchen cooking, day in and day out, can get old.  It’s a lot more enjoyable when you nave nice tools to help you get the job done; it can actually be fun.  When I’m using one of Mike Chatham’s handmade knives to cut up my vegetables during meal prep, I enjoy every single chop of the knife.  It just makes me happy to use this piece of art to help me get my work done.  It’s so pretty, and it feels good in my hand.

If you follow Down in the Delta on social media where I frequently share food pics of what I’m cooking at Pimperl Place, you’ll catch glimpses of this prized possession of mine.  I try to share them too, because Mike likes to see pics of his work “in action.”  That knife makes such pretty pictures, too, so there’s that.

A little about Mike…he lives right here among us in Bay Minette, right smack in the middle of town.  His day job is in management at a granite countertop fabrication place, so he can also hook you up with a fine-looking countertop for your kitchen or bath too.  (I recently had them install white marble in my kitchen for an update and I’m in love with it.)  He has a beautiful wife, Karen, who is a nurse at our local hospital, and my friend.  They have two grown children.  When not working his day job or making knives, Mike likes to hunt and fish, which is what lead him to make knives in the first place.

He makes his beautiful knives in his spare time and sells them at various markets.  As a matter of fact, that’s where I first discovered Mike and his knives—it was at the Jubilee Festival of Arts in Daphne several years ago.  Even though he was almost sold out as I ran quickly through to see the vendors, I knew at first glance that I needed a knife.

I’ve purchased knives not only for myself, but one for each of our three children.  They are destined to be family heirloom treasures to be passed down, although I think I may ask that mine be buried with me.  🙂 My husband, John, says that I’m definitely that attached to my knife.

If you’re in the market for a good knife, that’s also a work of art, contact Mike.  He’s good to work with you to get exactly what you want.  He’ll send pictures with measurements, different wood handle options, etc.  Maybe you’re like me and you didn’t know you wanted a new knife until you learned about Chatham Knives…put it on your Christmas wish list!

Mike was just featured in Okra magazine, which is what reminded me that I had planned to feature him a year ago and, well, life happened and it slipped my mind.  Just a tip for you though…if you want a knife, you need to get one now before he gets so famous that you can’t get your hands on one!  I mean, with a feature in a magazine, that’s what happens!
